Purple Clay pottery is wheel-thrown in Yixing, China, the country's pottery production center better known for its distinctive tea pots. Purple Clay is high in iron and makes a planter that is more durable than terra cotta but maintains porosity. The level of iron is responsible for the three true clay colors of Red, Purple and Yellow.
Purple Clay pottery is burnished and not glazed to maintain porosity. A thin coat of clay slip is applied to the outside before firing. Glazed pots impede the flow of air to roots, whereas a burnished pot does not. The underside of each planter is stamped with the artisan's unique "chop".
